If you want your business to thrive, you need to be able to attract and nurture quality leads. Sales funnels are one of the best tools for doing just that.
A sales funnel is a series of steps that your prospective customers go through to move from being just a visitor to becoming a lead to finally making an actual purchase. The most basic version of a sales funnel has four stages: awareness/attraction, interest, desire and action. It was first introduced by advertising advocate Elias St. Elmo Lewis in 1898 and is also known as the AIDA model.
The first step, awareness, is the moment that your prospects become aware of your brand. This could be from a blog post, social media ad, infographic or other content that your brand creates. At this stage, your audience isn’t necessarily ready to buy— they may simply need more information to decide if your product is right for them.
You need to use content to capture this audience’s attention at this stage—content that will answer their questions, educate them and assure them that they are in the right place to find what they are looking for. This can be done through organic marketing tactics (blog posts, infographics, landing pages) and paid marketing tactics (social media advertising, targeted keywords and influencer content).
Once your audience has moved to the interest stage, they are beginning to consider your product or service as an option for them. This is when your sales team can begin pursuing them with product demos, product proposals and other relevant sales activities. This is a crucial step as it’s when your audience will decide whether they will take a chance on you and your brand.
The final stage is when your audience moves into the action phase—the moment that they start using your products and services. This is when they start seeing real results from their purchase and ideally, begin to refer you to friends and family. You can keep these customers engaged with a remarketing strategy that includes email, SMS and phone notifications.
A sales funnel can predict future revenue for your business by measuring the percentage of people who make it from one stage to the next. This data can be used to optimize each stage of the funnel and improve conversion rates—for example, doubling the number of people that move from awareness to action can increase your sales significantly.
The most important aspect of creating a successful sales funnel is understanding your customers and their needs.
By imagining what your ideal customer looks like, you can ensure that each stage of the sales process is tailored to meet their specific needs and preferences. This will help you to identify what types of content, marketing tactics and activities are most effective in converting visitors into leads, leads into prospects and ultimately, customers.
You can also use your existing customer data to discover lookalike audiences and remarket to them at the most optimal time.
